it was a great pleasure and honour for us to welcome you at the
Current Understanding of Colorectal and Pancreatic Cancers (CUCAP)
– an international conference organised by the Chaperon project, Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University, in cooperation with the Institute of Experimental Medicine CAS.
The conference took place on May 29th and 30th, 2023, at the historical venue of the New Town Hall, Prague, Czech Republic.
The conference was dedicated to the most prominent questions in the research of two gastrointestinal cancers – those of colorectum and pancreas. The scientific programme featured the most renowned international speakers, covering the areas of cancer epidemiology, cancer genetics and epigenetics, microbiome, treatment and translational aspects. The conference also provided a platform for young colleagues to present and discuss their research in the poster sessions.
This event was organised under the patronage of Kari Hemminki and Pavel Vodička. Kari Hemminki is the ERA Chair holder of the Chaperon project at the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University, where he also leads the Laboratory of Translational Cancer Genomics. Pavel Vodička is the head of the Department of the Molecular Biology of Cancer of the Institute of Experimental Medicine CAS and a senior researcher of the Laboratory of Translational Cancer Genomics in Pilsen.

Charles University, one of the oldest universities in Europe, was founded in Prague by the Czech king and Roman emperor Charles IV in 1348. Over the centuries it has developed into a world-famous scientific and educational institution comprising 17 faculties, five of which are faculties of medicine. One of them was established in Pilsen in October 1945.
Institute of Experimental Medicine CAS
The Institute of Experimental Medicine CAS is a recognized center of basic biomedical research in the Czech Republic. At present, the institute consists of 11 separate scientific departments, focusing on research in biochemistry, cell and developmental biology, pathology, molecular embryology, genetic toxicology and nanotoxicology, neurobiology, neurophysiology, neuropathology, oncology, tissue replacement, and nanomedicine.
Czech Academy of Sciences /CAS/
The Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established by Act No. 283/1992 Coll. as the Czech successor of the former Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. It is set up as a complex of 54 public research institutions. The primary mission of the CAS and its institutes is to conduct research in a broad spectrum of the natural, technical and social sciences and the humanities.
